Can you subtract?

The Book Nook (below) is a review of a book I recently read that talked about design. Not just design in the traditional sense of the word, but design as it applies to processes and systems...think Toyota. And of course, I'm all about processes and systems.

There are 4 key principles to elegant design. Structure, seduction, subtraction and sustainability. They are, for the most part, easy to understand and the examples helped.

But the one that stuck with me was subtraction. I started thinking about some of the habits I have formed that may be costing me time. Things I do pretty automatically that take time. They don't necessarily move me further along towards my purpose or to what's important. So why am I doing them?

With that lightbulb, I started subtracting. Diligently. Every time I went into 'automode', I would stop and ask myself...is this getting me closer to what's important to me?  Is this getting me close to what I want to do? Whether it was more time to play, to work on a new book or to play with the dog...I just kept asking the question.

The results? I began subtracting things I did or tasks I created that weren't really all that important. I found I had less stress, more time and mostly more time to do what I wanted and not just what I had to do. Life was more fun and work had more flow to it.

But there's a secret. The secret is subtracting comes after you have a clear vision of what you want and need in life and work. Without the vision, it becomes somewhat...muddy. And as long as it's muddy, you won't subtract.

What did I really do? I changed my perspective. Moved my mindset. Got a handle on what was causing some problems. And then took the actions to change things. It was a process, like everything else in life, but well worth it.

Are you ready to move your mindset? That's easy...just answer this question.

What's important?  What can you subtract that keeps you from getting there?

Book Nook                                                                                  A review of what I've read lately...

The Pursuit of Elegance: Why the best ideas have something missing by Matthew May and Guy Kawasaki

In the biggest sense, this book is about simplicity and the power to change by thinking differently.

The 4 key concepts the authors talk about are structure, seduction, subtraction and sustainability. We can have better systems, processes and productivity by simply thinking of what we can do in these 4 areas in order to improve the design...of our life and work!
