Slow economy blind spots?  They might not be what you think.

It’s a slow economy. We pretty much know that. And we don’t know how much longer it will go on. We can try and simply 'live through it'. Or we can take the opportunity to move towards something new and different. For ourselves. For our businesses. For our organizations.

I recently read an interview with Gordon Segal, CEO of retailer Crate and Barrel. He said..."I've lived through five of these (slow economy) over the past 46 years and they're actually good for business. You look at all the expenses you took for granted, and you negotiate better. You get rid of the fluff...".

'Getting rid of the fluff' is what I've been doing most of the year with my clients. We've been re-examining personal and company productivity issues by revisiting systems and processes, re-defining and focusing on priorities, and examining individual job performance issues that include coaching for sales, management and staff. This work is about examining and measuring current processes. Uncovering the productivity blind spots.

But what about NEW initiatives? Entering NEW markets or providing NEW services and products??  Are you experiencing SEBs (slow-economy blind spots) related to 'new' things? NEW requires climbing out of our comfort zone. Being proactive. Taking a chance.

Making something new and different means first seeing it in our mind’s eye. If we don't see it it doesn't translate into action. We aren't proactive. We don't do anything different.

Yet businesses need to keep re-inventing themselves by offering new and expanded services and products. This has to do with being able to assess, in a balanced way, the risk.

You may be a victim of your own thinking. That thinking might be preventing you from developing NEW products or opening NEW markets. Many of my clients have moved past this and preliminary efforts are proving successful.

If your thoughts encourage you to just keep doing more of the same you might avoid re-inventing or shaking up your business. What are the outcomes of this type of thinking? What are the results to your top and bottom line? I began opening new markets 2nd half of 2008. It's been both fun and profitable
learning more about these new industries.

Climbing out of your comfort zone is essential for continued business growth. Just as staying focused on priorities is key to implementing your plans. If you're thinking about risk and different ideas in a UNbalanced way, it's not serving you or your organization. Consider what it will take to identify and shift those thoughts in order to make the change you need to make.

Shifting your perspective results in shifting everything else. Including your success.

Organizing Matters - Client stories of challenges, solutions and successes

The Challenge...A small business owner became more directly involved in sales. He was spending more time on the road, and was concerned about his business' marketing plan getting implemented correctly and on time.

The Solution...Set up both a master Marketing Calendar and a specific event calendar. Outline it on a spreadsheet first and then put the information on the master electronic calendar in the office. Color code it if it helps. Then assign a person in your office to implement based on the calendar

Result? Everyone knows the Marketing plan and it can be implemented easily. You stay in front of your customers even while you're on the road.

productivity issues... theirs and their employees. Next one is scheduled for November 12th.

Executive Briefing in KC. I'm holding a joint executive briefing with my friend, Dan Stalp of Sandler/Brooks Associates on Thursday, September 25th. We'll be talking about your sales success and decision-making...our favorite topics!

Webinars. I've been creating more and more customized webinars while continuing to work on brand new ones based on your input and requests. October's will be all about priority roadblocks...yikes. See the complete listing.
