Trade up. The guy with one red paper clip did and look at his results! Did you see the television interview with the guy from Canada who traded his red paper clip for a house? That's right. A house. His dream was to become a homeowner and he wanted to do that sooner rather than later. One day at work he looked down on his desk and saw a red paper clip and wondered if he could trade it for something of that was of more value to him. Then trade that new item for something else of even greater value. He continued to do so and 14 trades and one year later he ended up with a home. A nice home. Trading up requires a strategy. It means looking at what you have now, thinking about what you value, making choices and taking action. What do YOU want in your life? More time to explore your own interests or personal development? More time with your family? Less stress? For example, if you're consistently stressed by priorities that keep seeming to shift, trade up by...
These are just 3 examples of what you can do. And my bet is that if you put on your thinking cap you can develop even more. The question remains...what do you value? Focusing on turning your dreams into reality is about recognizing what you value and deciding to act in accordance with what's important to you. Whether you want a house or less stress, using your what you value as a guide makes the journey more clear and less difficult..and the outcome a lot more positive. My new 6 Advisors™ assessment and coaching is all about value-based decision making. It's how your thoughts impact the choices you make and the results you get. Book Nook - The review of a book that could help you improve your organizing and time management skills The Power of Impossible Thinking by Jerry Wind and Colin Crook This book is written by a Wharton School professor and the Chief Technology Officer for Citibank. The key issue is that we all bring mental models to our lives and our business and these models either give us an 'edge' or 'hamstring our every initiative'. They provide one example of how Howard Schultz, of Starbucks fame, got a new mental model of coffee retailing after sitting in European coffee bars. Published by Wharton Publishing and retails for $16.99. |

With the President of NAPO, Barry Izsak, at the NAPO conference in Boston

What's NEW at Organize it? Stepping down from NAPO board. After 6 years on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), I stepped down this year and was acknowledged at a ceremony held in Boston at our annual conference. The last 4 years I served as Secretary and am proud of the contributions my team made to further this organization's growth and maturity. Website revised. One very scary weekend earlier this year I incorporated Organize it website into my Productivity Partners website. A Kansas City Star...that's what I are. Another 15 seconds of fame! I was interviewed by the Kansas City Star in an article that appeared in the Business section on July 4th. Thanks to those of you who contacted me after seeing it! September 25 Regional IABC conference in Kansas City. It's always interesting to see someone on the phone, one hand on the computer and the other moving through the files. So I'll be giving a presentation about focus and productivity! |

Gadgets - to save time and space KeyCard Travelock Security Kit Laptop security in hotel rooms is always a concern to me. Since I got a new laptop with a bigger screen, it doesn't always fit in the room safe. RoadWired has a travelock system that relies on coded cards rather than a combination lock. It includes a foot long galvanized cable that is very thin but very tough. The kit is $16 and includes 4 separate locks and cards. Go to www.roadwired.com Oysters...but not THAT kind I recently saw this in a client's office and wished I'd known about it before buying my 17" monitor to plug into my laptop. It's designed to put your laptop screen at an ergonomically acceptable height. It's got a built-in four port USB hub and can hide your cables. All you need is an external keyboard and mouse. Very cool. It's about $149 and you can find it at: www.oysterdock.com Mobile PC Printer Sometimes we have to print when we have to print. Technology let's us do that in the car...in color or black and white! This printer is about the size of a roll of plastic wrap and connects to your computer using a credit-card sized PC card. Brother's MP-21C is about $299. |
